Question:

In 1997 I changed our electric furnace - heat pump to high efficiency oil eliminating the heat pump except for air conditioning. We live at a lake and have about a 4'5" crawl space in the basement. The furnace I chose lays on it's side because of a high water problem. It seemed to be a nightmare having it installed. First they couldn't get the furnace and vent working together, then a strong oil smell. Then it being very noisy. After numerous service calls I was told that it was because of the location of the vent and I had no choice but to put up with the noise and vibrations. It has been getting louder and louder and in January it started to vibrate so much that the burners on my kitchen stove rattle. I contacted the furnace people and asked if a solution to the noise would be a chimney and they jumped at that. Finally I got the furnace people to order a new motor and fan but every time I call them they say it is on backorder. I might add that in 1998 when they came to clean the furnace and I asked where the filter went - I couldn't find it. Apparently there was no provision for the filter so they cut a section at the end of the burner that now holds the filters.

Answer:

I know nothing about brand names but I do know a bit about standards and your furnace appears not to have met the minimum there. My suggestion, rather than a new chimney or new anything else, is to get in touch with the manufacturer and explain your problems. I'm sure they have a web site and on it, they usually have a section where you can submit comments. That should be your next stop. Keep your message as short as possible and you'll be more assured of it being read.
