I bought a 35 year old house and added among other things a electonic air cleaner to the ac. It doensnt seem to collect much however. My wife is having respiratory problems since, we have turned the ac on this spring. I wipe black material off of the duct openings every 4, 5 months and I notice the fan blades need cleaning often. How about getting the ducts cleaned? How is this done? I have heard that it is a rip-off.

You heard wrong. This is something that anyone with reiratory problems, in particular, should become very familiar with because it should be done at least every 3 or 4 years. There are several people doing this kind of work but try to hire a local rather than someone from out of town - you may wan to get in touch with them again.
