I have an open area wood stove in the basement with an open stairwell to the kitchen. The kitchen heats fine, but the rest of the house is much colder. If I cut a vent hole in the floor of the upstairs hall and in the ceiling of the basement, will the airflow properly heat the upstairs or do I need some sort of second vent as well. If so, exactly where would it be put; at the top or bottom of the basement wall leading to the top or bottom of the upstairs wall?
Answer:
Your vent system should do the trick if you put a small fan behind the stove so air is moved more efficiently.
