Question:

Some time in the past you mentioned venting the basement air outside to reduce humidity. You said to put a fan at floor level and set it on a timer to come on automatically. What size of fan you recommend? The maximum run to the outside you recommend? How long to have it run per day? Where to put the vent. I am dealing with a 1380 sq. ft. basement.

Answer:

The fan I spoke of is one of the inexpensive 18" or so diameter units available at all outlets where household items are sold. There should not be a consideration for maximum run because at under 1500 sq. ft. no matter where you place the fan, it will create enough turbulence to exhaust humid air. I would though, want it as far from the opened window as possible and my suggestion has always been to put such a unit on a 12-hours on and 12-off timer.
