Question:

I am in the process of purchasing a new home. The builder recommends a "power" humidifer for a cost of $650 because we will have hardwood floors on the main level. Do you think this is necessary?

Answer:

The only humidifier I'd have in the house is a 'flo thu' product and if the hardwood is properly climatized before installation, there shouldn't be need for one at all. Hardwood flooring is, after all, some centuries newer than humidifiers and there are many around to attest to what I say.
