We built our bungalow in 1959 and have two large picture windows in front which, in the winter, run non-stop. I have always had a dehumidifier running in the basement, emptying it usually every two days. Last year I purchased a brand new one, but still the windows ran terribly. Could you suggest to me any solution for the problem? And should I have the drywall pulled off and have a carpenter look inside for mould?
Answer:
Your best bet is to try drying out the place at first. Open all the windows a sixteenth of an inch and keep some fans on. Once the condensation goes from the windows you can start shutting windows one at a time but do not expect ever to have them all shut. You'll probably have one open just that little bit all winter. No, there will be no real heat loss.
