Question:

I am renovating a room in my old house. The house is not framed it is solid brick. I am going to frame and insulate the two outside walls. I am figuring on 24" centers and am wondering about using steels studs. do they sell 24" insulation? I have seen 23". Is steel appropriate for outside walls? Another question would be what is the insulation factor of brick per inch?

Answer:

I would not recommend 24" centres because the wall coverings are not meant to span 24". The R value of brick is not going to be much over R2 and then, only if the mortar is in exceptionally good condition.
