Question:

I have a new steel roof, installed on battens on top of my old roof, which as several layers of asphalt shingles. Since there is now lots of ventillation space (2-3 inches) under the steel roof, can I now fill the rafter spaces with insulation to create a heated attic living space? If not, what should I do?

Answer:

I hope you're sitting down. Those old shingles are serving as vapour barrier but they're on the wrong side of the insulation so if you plan to insulate, the old shingles must come off.
