I live in a two year old raised ranch. Last winter when I started to finish my basement, I noticed alot of condensation behind the vapour barrier and insulation on my exterior basement walls. The builder was notified and insisted that it was from lack of air circulation on my part. After tearing the vapour barrier down, removing the wet insulation and cleaning what appeared to be mold, the builder let it dry out and reinstalled new insulation and vapour barrier but at our request, leaving it 6-8 inches off the floor. In my opinion the house was overinsulated and too air tight but I may never know the true cause of the problem. Since the repair everything is ok. With this being said I have a question about soundproofing a room. I have read your suggestions about soundproofing a room but I dont think it will be practical in my case. I am interested in using the safe and sound batts in my ceiling. With the previous problems i had with condensation, the last thing i want to do is make it worse. Do you think adding sound batts in the basement ceiling could contribute to further condensation problems?
Answer:
It certainly will bevcause insulation in this situation will not only attract moisture, it will also retain it.
