I live in a really old house 130 years old ,it is an old log cabin but you couldn't tell that if you saw it but anyway i've been in it going on 2 years but this year with the temperature going down to below -35c every wall in the house had air coming through ,it cost $2000.00 dollars since Nov.11th for propane so my question is ,when the spring comes and i start to insulate the ENTIRE house what in your opinion would be the best way to do that ? I am having the whole house done with siding ,what should i put for insulation and how will i do it?
Answer:
I'd first strap the exterior vertically with 2X4 on edge so that 3.5 inches of rigid fibre insulation could be applied between the strapping. To do this properly, I drill half-inch holes part-way through the 2X4 and then use long drywall screws to attach. Install a 2X4 and then a 2' wide sheet of insulation and then another 2X4 and so on until you've gone around the whole house. You can build out around windows and doors and then bend aluminum to clad the 2X4 strapping.
