I am helping my son finish an older house extension with insulation and wallboard. The outer edge of the extension is sitting on floating piers. The crawl space is too low to the ground. Can we insulate the floor on the inside with 1" foam and Laminate flooring? Will the foam resist crushing? What kind of foam? Thnx Gerry Holt
Answer:
Hi Gerry
To insulate that floor with 1" styrofoam insulation would only give u and r-value of 5 not enough for an overhang where a room is above and in time will crush itself therefore leading to the detaching of the laminate flooring from the styrofoam. I would strongly advise that you reconsider and insulate the underside of the sheathing with either fiberglass batting or a spray in place foam, it would create a lot warmer floor. The best option would be to insulate with Icynene spray foam. Contact me for further questions or inquiries Sam Marrello Comfort Insulation 613-226-9912
