Question:

Would you please repeat your instructions on the care of septic tanks and weeping beds.

Answer:

Septic systems need to be protected from winter traffic of any kind over them because if snow insulation is compacted, the whole system may freeze and thawing can take until the following summer. My preference is to keep all possible activity at least ten feet away from any part of the system. To aid their endurance between pumpings, only bio-degradables should be flushed into them. If municipal by-laws permit, a septic activator should be introduced on a monthly basis. Pumpings should be recorded and original documentation archived for the life of the system.
