I listen to you on CFRA. You have a very informative and entertaining show. My wife and I live in Renfrew, Ontario. We are interested in buying a house that is 100 years old. This house is a beautiful 3 story house with a great porch and it is bricked. The house was insulated 20 years ago with urea formaldehyde insulation. Could there be a residue of vapors after all this time? Should we be concerned about possible health hazards? Is there a way to check if there are fumes emanating from the walls? Any answers or information would be greatly appreciated.
Answer:
You'll want to see the "Statement of disclosures" that has to come with the house and you can be sure your mortgage lender is going to be interested in it. UFFI is actually quite inert after about eight years but under certain conditions (i.e. when moisture is re-introduced), I understand it does become active again.
