Question:

My new house has 1/2 pink rigid foam insulation (R2.5) glued to the perimeter walls of my basement (Ceiling to floor). I framed the walls and complimented the existing pink rigid foam with R14. I placed the R-14 snug aginst the pink (not compressing) do I need a vapour barrier and if I did use it, would it cause problems? Is this method of insulating a basement good?

Answer:

lUnoftunately you already have a VB and its on the wrong side of the insulation. Once rigid, high density foam is 1.5" thick, it serves as a VB. You'll be best off to take the foam off and start over because you'll want VB over the R-14 but if you have one also on the othere side, you'll attract condensation like you would not belive.

Remember, even if you don’t do your own work around the house have to hire someone, you put yourself at a great advantage when you can intelligently discuss a project with the various trades people.
