Question:

I once saw a project where shelving units were built in the wall between the studs. Do you have any information on how this would be done?

Answer:

I've done it many times in the past. This is where 2X6 studs (24" O.C.)in dividing walls come in handy but I've done it more with the conventional 16" o.c. walls. Cut the drywall out betwen two studs in a dividing wall and you'll find a 14.5" wide cavity that can go as high as you want and as low as you want. Now cut a piece of 1/2" gypsum board drywall to fit the cavity. This doesn't have to be cut very precisely because when you line the sides of the cavity with 1X4 pine, the edges are covered anyway. You can trim it up with ordinary door casing and then makes the shelves out of 1X4. You've just created shelving that is 3-1/2" deep by 13" wide for knick-knacks, pocket books, etc. If you decide to make the shelves wider than the 1/4, you should make them easily removable and certainly adjustable.
