Question:

We are redecorating our hall the handrail leading to upstairs is a beautiful wrought iron but the actual handrail portion is covered in a 1/2 inch of ugly rubber/plastic. We want to keep the original railing - just do something with or remove the covering.

Answer:

You can peel that off and then install wood over top of the metal rail. You'll find milled wood of quite a few different kinds that is made especially for your situation. This is not going to be cheap but it sure gets rid of that airline-waiting-room-look that you have right now.

Remember, even if you don’t do your own work around the house have to hire someone, you put yourself at a great advantage when you can intelligently discuss a project with the various trades people.
