Question:

i was wondering if it was wise to replace an existing drywall (popcorn ceiling) with new drywall? Without removing the existing ceiling. I bought an older house (1969) and over the years the previous owners patched the ceiling each time they had a leak (no major water damage). I just had roof replaced, no leaks. The old ceiling doesn't look bad during daylight but you can really see the patches in the evening or in the shadows. I was thinking of just replacing new thin drywall right over the existing area, its bascially the whole living room. Good idea or no?

Answer:

A great idea! Rather than a thin sheet of drywall though, I'd make it 5/8" because it is bulk and bulk is a temperature retainer. Warm it up and stays warm longer, cool if off and it stays cooler longer.

In the interests of retaining credibility that I worked several decades to establish and in fairness to all, I don’t comment on various (building, electrical, plumbing) codes, brand-specific products, recommend prices, people nor companies for various projects.

Remember, even if you don’t do your own work around the house have to hire someone, you put yourself at a great advantage when you can intelligently discuss a project with the various trades people.
