We have just discovered that the sub-floor under the carpet in our house is unfinished wood strips. The wood appears to be some kind of soft wood (possibly pine) about one inch thick. Can you tell us what we would need to have done to this floor if we were to lift the carpets and finish the sub-floor? Is this something that a do-it-yourselfer should tackle on their own, or is it a 'professionals-only' job?

As easily as any professional the DIY-er can lift the boards, place them closer together and nail them down again recycling the same nail holes.
