Question:

We have inherited an oil painting done by my husband's grandmother. The colours are very dismal and I think it may be due to over 50 years exposure to cigarette smoke. How do you clean an oil painting?

Answer:

For this one I'll send you to your favorite outlet for vertical and/or horizontal blinds. These folks deal with your problem on a daily basis and they'll have at least three cleaners for you. I'd be worried about using something so strong that it effects the paint. What I have use in the past is varsol that I dab onto the paint and then dab off again with non-linting rags.
