I have a typical split-entry house with the L shaped wall dividing the livingroom/diningroom from the small kitchen. I would like to open up this area using the simplest method I can. I thought of taking down the top half of the wall and putting a small countertop on it. The wall is plaster and I would be getting a contractor to do it. Is this an idea that I should just forget (I am afraid of getting cracks in the plaster etc) Do you think this will be expensive to do?
Answer:
Costs will depend on the contractor but you can certainly do it. If the opening you plan is more than three feet long you'll have to consider a lintel to provide the support your studs are presently providing.
Remember, even if you don’t do your own work around the house have to hire someone, you put yourself at a great advantage when you can intelligently discuss a project with the various trades people.
