Question:

I redid the bathroom replacing the lino, sink, toilet, tub, and drywall around the tub. The paint was quite blistered on the ceiling so I scraped this off, patched the holes with drywall mud, primed and painted it. There was no fan in the bathroom and I didn't realize that this was a problem. After a short while of having hot showers the ceiling was mildewed and blistered again and there was mildew on the caulking around the tub surround. I have had several suggestions including just stop showering. If you recommend the tub surround with a cap, do you know is this available only as part of a tub or is there tub surrounds with caps that would install any tub.

Answer:

I have a feeling the fan you put in was less than 110 CFM. You may also not have been told that in order for it to do a proper job, it must be on all the time there is water running in there plus five or so minutes. That will look after your problem at a cost far below replacement of enclosure and adding the cap. The three piece system will contain only a certain amount of the condensation. Most of it still ends up on the ceiling and down the hall.
