Question:

I am installing a new island in my kitchen. The counter top will be 3cm thick maple strips. I will be using this island as a "chop block". What is the best finish to put on the maple. I heard that vegetable oil works fine. What is the best type of oil to use? How often should I re-apply?

Answer:

Any vegetable oil will do and that is all you have to do with it. Once applied, it will soak in deep enough that you should not have to apply it again until the surface wares down at least a quarter of an inch.
