Question:

My wife wants to have a marble or limestone bathroom counter top installed. It's ok by me if it isn't horribly expensive and if it will stand up to normal bathroom type chemicals like the stuff she uses on her hair. She's a good girl and works hard.

Answer:

It will certainly stand up to as much as any other counter top product available for the purpose. Here is a statement I often have to include in my house inspection reports where I find these moulded units: The vanity sink is a marble product while its drainage system is made of brass. It appears that during installation, someone tightened the drainage system with a wrench rather than just by hand. Masonry does not re-act to temperature change at the same rate that brass does and for that reason, the sink in the area of the drain is starting to break up. First it cracks badly and then it breaks and leaks under normal circumstances.
