Question:

I want to try building replacement kitchen cabinets, to upgrade the frameless carcasses from 1982 suburban developer/contractor-grade coarse particle board. I would use jigs to get uniform/standard hole spacing and alignment of joining hardware (all standard stuff). Wood might look nice, but I'm concerned about dimensional stability in the fluctuating heat/humidity of a kitchen. What's the best material to use for cabinet carcasses? What do I ask for at building supply store?

Answer:

Over the last couple of decades I've made many cabinet carcasses for a great variety of purposes with 5/8" melimine. I've not found a problem with it - its easy to work with and about the least expensive too.

In the interests of retaining credibility that I worked several decades to establish and in fairness to all, I don’t comment on various (building, electrical, plumbing) codes, brand-specific products, recommend prices, people nor companies for various projects.

Remember, even if you don’t do your own work around the house have to hire someone, you put yourself at a great advantage when you can intelligently discuss a project with the various trades people.
