Question:

We have a 10'x12' poured concrete pad [about 4 inches thick] at our back door. It is deteriorating and my plan is to spread a thin layer of stone dust on the cement to even the surface and then put down cement patio stones [each one about 20" x 20"]. I can't put much more stone dust down as there would not be room for the door to open. Will the above approach work? If not, do I have to remove the old pad? and if so, what is the best way to do it; obviously an unattractive alternative!

Answer:

I can't see why it wouldn't work particularly if you have some way of stabilizing the stones so they don't slide off. Often the old pad has sunken an inch of two into the lawn so that's not a problem. Even if it doesn't work, the stones can be re-cycled if you have to end up taking the old pad out.
