Question:

We had a concrete garage floor poured two weeks ago. When should be contemplate treating with the protective solution you mention on your show? i.e. chemically boiled linseed oil and?

Answer:

My suggestion has always been that the floor needs to be left alone for two seasons and then sealed with a 50/50 mixture of chemically boiled linseed oil and varsol to protect it from spalling as a result of salt and grime contamination. The area will have to be cleaned well first though and then permitted to dry. A couple of warnings to you - if you use raw linseed oil, it will take a very long time to cure and your garage floor cannot be used until it does, just in case the floor has already been sealed in this way before, test a small portion of it before trying to do the whole thing. Removing the solution is not pleasant. This compound is prone to spontaneous combustion so all safety measures should be observed when using it - clothes soaked in it along with residue and working materials containing it should be taken to a chemical waste depot.
