Question:

I purchased a 22year old multilevel, brick veneer home with a finished basement. I have a leak in the basement. The water appears along one wall near about three feet from the corner. The exterior walls are poured concrete and the interior is drywall. After inspecting the wall, which has a very light spray of black tar like substance on it, I can see a very fine crack in the wall. I'd like to get the wall filled in before the winter. Would there be a problem if the wall remained exposed during the winter?

Answer:

Inspecting the interior of the wall in the area of the crack for water staining should tell you if it's leaking. To patch it, use an ordinary fibreglass, auto body patch kit on the outside and make sure you apply it only to very clean surfaces.
