What is the cost difference between adding a second story as compared to 1/2 story? What are the additional work would have to be done to the original first story when a second story is added?
Answer:
You'll have to get a building permit for this and that means submitting drawings of the existing structure to your local building authority. They'll be the ones to decided whether you have the structural integrity to support an upper addition. If I were to add a second story, and I wouldn't bother with the half story addition, I'd take advantage of the opportunity and cantelever the new structure about three feet on all sides. This gives you a great deal of extra square footage at a minimum extra cost.
Remember, even if you don’t do your own work around the house have to hire someone, you put yourself at a great advantage when you can intelligently discuss a project with the various trades people.
