Question:

We've recently had a 600 square foot pressure treated deck professionally installed. Only three weeks after it was completed we noticed that approx. 90% of the nails used on the deck boards were rusting and staining the wood. We've brought this to the contractor's attention and he agrees with us that the incorrect nails were used. His fix is to clean the nail heads, galvanize them, and then power wash the deck boards.
An opinion that we've received from another source is that the correct way to resolve this problem would be to remove all the incorrect (ungalvanized) nails and replace them with the correct (galvanized) ones.

Answer:

For what you want, 'hot galvanized' nails hve to be used and there is no way of doing that once the nails are in place. Your second source is absolutely right.

In the interests of retaining credibility that I worked several decades to establish and in fairness to all, I don’t comment on various (building, electrical, plumbing) codes, brand-specific products, recommend prices, people nor companies for various projects.

Remember, even if you don’t do your own work around the house have to hire someone, you put yourself at a great advantage when you can intelligently discuss a project with the various trades people.
