Question:

I was wondering if you had any suggestions on removing spindells that I have in my house? The ones that seperate the rooms that go from waist high up to the ceilings. My home was built in 1978 and I guess that was the thing back then but I don't like them and need some suggestions on what I can replace the area with.

Answer:

Normally these things slide up into the top plate and then are pulled down to fit the base they sit in. If the spindles aren't nailed, you should be able to turn them and perhaps push them upward far enough to disengage them from the base. Be careful because you may have only drywall above them if they were build and installed as a unit. Push too hard and you'll have a hole to repair int he ceiling.
