Question:

What should I look for when hiring a home building contractor, or any type of contractor for that matter.

Answer:

The first thing to look for is a good lawyer who will review with you all the local perameters within which the contractor will have to work. There, you'll also get an education regarding step payments as the work goes on and liabilities to be borne by yourself, contractor and sub-contractors. Starting dates, finishing dates, Modifications (extras) to the contract as work progesses (there are always extras), various kinds of insurance, etc. will all be also part of it along with what condition the site is to be left in when all is done - who hauls away the trash. You'll also want to keep a copy of these stipulations so that in future, should you be required to hire contractors for smaller projects (roofing, landscaping, driveway, etc.)you'll have a point of departure without having to go to the expense of another legal bill.

Telephone and E mail information is always free so please don’t hesitate to take advantage of it.

In the interests of retaining credibility and in fairness to all, I cannot recommend prices, people nor companies for various projects.

Remember, even if you don’t do your own work around the house have to hire someone, you put yourself at a great advantage when you can intelligently discuss a project with the various trades people.
