Question:

We contracted a company to replace the main(only)support beam in our 100 year old american four square home. We were under the impression the replacement ibeam was going to be 30ft in length. Instead the company used two separate beams and placed a metal channel with a telepost underneath were the beams met. The two beams are not bolted or welded together. Is this acceptable when replacing the only support beam of the house?

Answer:

Building rules in various jurisdictions differ. You might want to talk to someone at your local home builders' association and they'll be up to date on it.

In the interests of retaining credibility and in fairness to all, I cannot recommend prices, people nor companies for various projects.
