I have a paved driveway that has a dirt and sand base. I require advice regarding what to look for when a contractor gives me a quote to repave. I.E. how deep should he dig out the old material and what should he replace it with? Is there a difference in asphalt quality? If yes what is the best type? How thick should the asphalt be when it is put down and after it is compacted? PS Saturday morning is not complete without listening to your show over breakfast.
Answer:
The excavation should be at least a foot deep and then you'll need gravel before laying in at least three inches of aspalt. Thee are differences between types of asphalt but it seems the more aggrigate you have in it, the longer it lasts.
