Question:

My kitchen cabinets are white oak veneer. Our dishwasher leaked and the cabinet around it got wet. The bottom 2 - 3 inches of the cabinet now has a dark stain in the wood. How can I remove the stain, or at least lighten it? The stain is in a not too visible area, so the repair doesn't need to be perfect.

Answer:

The best you'll do here is paint right over the stain with a good stain deadener and then a finish coat because if the surface is discoloured, you can be sure the base the veneer is on has started to swell and there is no way you'll reverse that.
