My wife no longer likes the look and colour of our house - covered with the grey, smooth surfaced brick that was used in the 60's and with flush mortar joints. What recoating/residing options (ie stucco, painting are available?

Why not take it off and replace it with mortarless brick that comes in a variety of colours. You can paint it too but you won't get the longevity out of paint.
