Question:

I want to paint my garage door outside and main door and trims. What prep do I need to do, i.e. do I have to scrape my old paint off (which has not chipped at all, but just faded). What primer and when is it best (season) to do this.

Answer:

If there's nothing wrong with the paint job now, I'd just scrub it with steel wool and varsol and apply a good primer meant for both latex and alkyd based paints. Now you can apply whatever finish you want.
