Question:

My son purchased a 100 year old house with beautiful stained wood trim that is rough with coats of varnish and age. Is there any way of smoothing it out without having to strip it off completely so it will look newer?

Answer:

At that age, I don't think he'll have much luck. Even removing it will make the cleaned wood look more laundered than anything else but after that, if he's willing to put up with a darker stain, he can re-finish it.

In the interests of retaining credibility and in fairness to all, I cannot recommend prices, people nor companies for various projects.
