Question:

I have a ceiling fan located below my skylight in the foyer of my two story house. Which direction should the fan be set in winter and summer? Also, someone once mentioned to me that a ceiling fan under a skylight was good in that it prolongs the life of the window. Is this true?

Answer:

These fans move a lot of air so the direction of the blade isn't really as much of a concern as is the environment it creates. My preference is to have the fan pushing air downward at slow speed and it should never be shut off. If it draws air upward, it will probably take all the lint and other atmospheric impurities in the house and stick them to the ceiling in the immediate area so what you save on energy you spend on paint and other than that, you've gained nothing. You system is one that I've been promoting for some years and it does work very well.
