Question:

The paint on the lowest wood portions of an exterior window and shutter comes off within a few years and the underlying wood is begining to rot. The reason is the repeated acculumlation and melting of snow on the parts in question. How do I eliminate the problem? Will impregnation of the wood with epxoy resin stop the rot? If so, what type of paint will provide a durable film on the epoxy? Also. what type of caulking compound will bond well to the epoxy.

Answer:

While there are all kinds of paints and caulking compounds that will bond to wood, the wood has to be dry before the primer coat or anything else that might need to soak in is applied. Once the priming process is compromised it will be hard to apply anything because it will only sit on the surface in places and that will not permit the finishing coat to bond well enough to endure.
