Question:

We presently have compressed wood siding on our home of 28 years that needs replacing. To date we have received one estimate and he suggested that the best way was to strap over the old siding and add the new aluminum thus forming extra insulation. (He will remove the siding -same price if we choose that route). What do you suggest? We are also replacing 2 windows. What happens first--window installation or the siding? The window people say windows; siding people say siding first.

Answer:

I would never dare put new siding over old because it creates a second vapour barrier that is also on the wrong side of the insulation. Windows get done first - always! That's two out of two so perhaps talking to another siding contractor is the answer. Neither do you explain why you want new siding instead of painting the compressed wood fibre product you have. Another thought comes to my mind; why would anyone want to apply aluminum in this day and age when vinyl is less expensive, easier to handle and the motto "Vinyl is final" is very true. Sorry if I've shot holes in some of your thoughts but my suggestions are worth thinking about.
