I would like to just refresh the hardwood floor. Can I just use a palm sander and rough up the floor and then put a coat of urethane on it?

I would not suggest to a novice that he or she sand floors because the machine it takes to do a good job eats a lot of wood very fast and can ruin an otherwise good product. I'd want a pro to do it and if you're going to try it yourself, I'd want to practice with the sander and edger somewhere where it will never show.
