Top > Plaster & Drywall > Paint

Question:

We have just finished painting my in-laws place and the walls are 3/4 in plaster on the inside and 1/4 inch plaster then cement on the outside. When we try to put in a picture hook it takes out a piece about the size if a quarter What would be the best way of putting up a plate rail and to hang pictures.

Answer:

Before driving nails into plaster, heat them with a torch and they won't shatter the backing. For a plate rail you might try using 3" drywall screws. For pictures, use longer nails sloped downward or screw-in type inserts to hold screws.
