Expert Q
Question:
We bought a house about 9 months ago and have noticed that some cracks that were present in the plasterwork when we bought the house are gradually getting worse. When the addition was built about a third of the back wall of the house would have had to be replaced. Is it possible that the addition is settling and causing the cracks in the original house? If this is indeed simply the result of the addition settling and we have to wait another 5 or 6 years until it has finished doing so, what can we do with the cracks in the interim?
Answer:
It is probably exactly that - settling of the addition but that will be all but complete in about 3 to 4 years so you shouldn't have to worry much about it. What is more interesting is whether there was any mention of this in the "Statement of Disclosures" when you bought the house. Your lawyer might want to get invovled if it wasn't.
