Top > Plaster & Drywall > Re-Enforcement

Question:

My house is very old - lathe and plaster. It is also a 1 1/2 story house, so has sloped ceiling in the bedrooms. Right now it is covered in several layers of wallpaper. I am afraid to remove it for fear the whole wall will crumble as my ceiling has started to do.
How can I redo it? What should I use? Should I take off the wallpaper first? What should I do about the ceiling? Some of the other rooms were done in chipboard and have been painted or papered over. My house also shifts with the frost and develops cracks in the walls.
I know it would be easier if I could just demolish it and start over, but I can't.

Answer:

A good wholesale drywall outlet will have a product that looks like white gunny sacking that comes in widths of 36" I believe and you can use that as wallpaper of what you have now. This will prevent the plaster from coming off and only professionals should work with plaster anyway. Once you have that on the walls and ceilings, you can paint andit may even help with the shifting showing up all over the place.
