I want to install a molding across the length of 1 wall in the kitchen eating area to protect the wall/paint from the back of the chairs. The wall is warped is a few places and I wanted to know the best way to fasten the molding to the wall. As the studs are approx 24 inches apart, this does not allow me to nail it properly in areas where the wall (drywall)curves inward. Would it be best to use some kind of adhesive along with nailing it? If so, what would be a proper adhesive to use when the molding is stained pine and the wall is covered with a water-based latex paint? I expect I will also make appropriate mitre cuts when connecting the 2 pieces and fasten them together at that location.
Answer:
Measure very carefully and cut a hole in the drywall. This hole will be just under an inch and a half high and not less than seven inches long. That way, when the chair rail is installed, the rail will cover it and you don't have to do any patching - until you decided to do away with the chair rail. The 1X2 pine will be installed horizontally and it should be twelve inches long - so you'll have to know where the studs are behind the drywall. Because the rail will cover it anyway, you can probe for the studs with a nail. A drywall screw in the middle of it will serve as a handle so you don't drop it into the wall cavity while you drive a couple of drywall screws through the drywall at either end of it and right into the pine. You now remove the handle, remember where the pine is, and use very thin finishing nails (tips slightly blunted so they go in easier) to attach your rail to it.
