Can you give me a quick run-through on taping and jointing?

Normally the mistake we novices make with joint compound is that we use too much of it. The first coat over the tape should be no more than about 4" wide and that won't need sanding. The second application is probably a foot wide and will need very little sanding. The final application is going to be anything up to a couple of feet wide and sanding again, is very little. Where there are ridges in any of it, I don't sand at all. I cut the ridges off with the trowel. I hope this is at least a bit of help to you.
