Question:

Ceiling paint has flaked following water damage, now corrected. Ceiling is plaster in a 75yr old home. What is best method to restore flat surface: skim, drywall or? Not an expert in DIY any 'easy' suggestions!

Answer:

Where it has deteriorated to the point of falling apart, you'll be best off to cut it out and replace with drywall even if you have to use more than one layer. Where its less than 3/8" damaged, use a mixture of plaster of paris but do this carefully because it dries hard in minutes. You'll still have to give it a skim coat of mud afterward before priming and painting.
