Question:

I live in Houston TX and have a house with wood eaves and overhangs that need painting. I recieved an advertisement to install vinyl eaves and overhangs instead of painting ever again. It sounds great, but what are the downsides? Where can I read more about the downsides? I wonder if mold will grow inside them in Houston's humid climate?

Answer:

Your best bet for researching the negatives is to talk to competing installers. I answer questions from all over the world on this site and have yet to register one concerning your anxiety. In Canada, we've about made the complete switch to vinyl or aluminum from coast to coast to coast. I also see these products being used throughout your southern states so there should be nothing to fear. Keep in mind though, if you compromise attic ventilation by not completely removing the old wooden soffits, you'll be inviding condensation problems and that's where moulds start; over a hundered kinds of them in our southern Ontario climate so you should expect to find even more where you live. Upper attic ventilation is at least as important.
