Expert Q Ren Molnar Q&A Archive
Top > Attic > Fan

Question:

I own a 2 story home which faces east, my problem is that my 2nd floor gets very warm in the summer time even with the A/C running constantly. A friend of mine suggested that I install a thermostatic fan in my attic, Please advise.

Answer:

That fan won't do you as much good as a large-diameter fan in the uppermost hallway. The attic, mind you, has to be properly ventilated. It is all but impossible to over ventilate the average residential attic. It is as important for air to have access to the cavity from under the eaves as it is for air to have an opportunity to exhaust as high up on the roof as possible. Proper soffit venting in combination with "U" channels and gable-to-gable baffled ridge venting appears to be the most cost effective, passive way of accomplishing this.
