Question:

An odour that smells like sewer occasionally permiates the interior of our home. This has actually been going on for several years. However, lately it has become stronger and more frequent. Do you have any ideas on what it could be or where we should begin solving this problem?

Answer:

If you're on city sewer and water, there could be a leak in the ventilation portion of your drainage system. If you are rural, the same could very well be the problem and the cap on the line leading from the inside of the basement wall to the septic (or holding) tank is the first thing you check. If you have a sump pump, you might also check that because these things sometimes create exactly what you describe and it does get more pronouced as the years go by.
